IAY (Indira Awaas Yojana ) : Scheme to provide Housing for All

PMGAY, Pradhan Mantri Gramin Awaas Yojana which was earlier known as Indira AwaasYojana (IAY) is a social welfare flagship program by the Government of India to provide housing facilities for the rural poor in the country.

A similar kind of scheme had been launched in the year 2015 for the urban poor known as Housing for All by 2022. The IAY was launched in the year 1985 by Rajiv Gandhi, the then PM of India. It was a major flagship program under the Ministry of Rural Development to construct houses for the BPL (Below Poverty Line) population of the villages.

Under the IAY/PMGAY scheme, proper financial assistance of â‚¹120,000 in the plain areas and â‚¹130,000 in the difficult areas (high land area) has been provided for the construction of houses for the rural poor. These houses will be equipped with a toilet, LPG connection, electricity connection, and drinking water. For these facilities, the Scheme has been converged with other schemes including Swachh Bharat Abhiyan toilets, UjjwalaYojana LPG gas connection, SaubhagyaYojana electricity connection, etc.

These houses have been allotted in the name of the woman or jointly both the husband and wife. The construction of these houses is the sole responsibility of the beneficiary. Any activity done by the contractors is strictly prohibited. The Sanitary latrine and the smokeless chullah need to be constructed in each IAY house for which additional financial assistance has been provided from the "Total Sanitation Campaign" and "Rajiv Gandhi GrameenVidyutikaranYojana". This scheme provides the village people with subsidies and cash assistance for the construction of their houses, themselves.

The major purpose of the IAY/PMGAY scheme is to provide financial assistance to the weakest sections of society so that they are able to construct a house of respectable quality for living. The Government of India has the vision to replace all the temporary (kutchcha) houses from the Indian villages by the year 2017. Through the scheme, shelter is provided to the economically weaker sections of the society. It has been projected that this scheme will cover around 1 crore families who are currently living in kutcha houses. All the basic facilities will be provided including power supply, water supply, and others.

The main aim is to provide a house to any Indian irrespective of the caste or religion. The shelter is one of the basic needs of living and a very large percentage of the Indian population can not afford to live in a house.

Hence, the IAY ( Indira AwaasYojana ) was launched to give financial aid was given. If you are someone or know someone who wants to get benefitted under this scheme, then check your eligibility for the same and then follow the application process given below to apply.
