On Sunday, U.S. President Joe Biden approved a substantial USD 567 million in defense support for Taiwan, as announced by the White House. This move marks the latest effort by the United States to bolster Taiwan's military capabilities amid escalating tensions with China.
Despite the absence of formal diplomatic ties, the United States remains Taiwan's most significant international ally and arms supplier. China, which claims Taiwan as its territory, has repeatedly urged Washington to cease arms sales to Taipei.
According to a White House statement, Biden delegated the Secretary of State with the authority "to direct the drawdown of up to USD 567 million in defense articles and services of the Department of Defense, and military education and training, to provide assistance to Taiwan."
No further details were provided regarding the specific defense articles or services included in the package.
This development follows Biden's signing of a significant bill in April, which allocated billions of dollars in new U.S. aid for Ukraine in its conflict with Russia, as well as for Israel and Taiwan.
