In a major move to boost its artificial intelligence capabilities, Google has reappointed Noam Shazeer, a key figure in AI known for his work on the Language Model for Dialogue Applications (LaMDA). This strategic decision involved Alphabet Inc., Google's parent company, investing billions to bring Shazeer back for an ambitious new project.
Shazeer, who previously left Google in October 2021, co-founded Character.AI, a chatbot startup that garnered significant investment, including from venture capitalist Andreessen Horowitz. To secure Shazeer's return, Google reportedly spent around USD 2.7 billion to license Character.AI’s technology.
This investment included acquiring stakes from Character.AI’s investors and employees, resulting in a substantial payout for Shazeer, according to the Wall Street Journal. His rehiring is part of a larger collaboration between Google and Character.AI, marking a significant strategic shift.
Google and Character.AI have entered into a non-exclusive agreement, allowing Google to utilize Character.AI’s technology. This collaboration highlights Google’s strategy of enhancing its AI capabilities through external partnerships. Additionally, several key personnel from Character.AI will be taking on leadership roles at DeepMind, Google’s AI research lab. Dominic Perella, the general counsel of Character.AI, will serve as interim CEO during this transition period.
Despite Character.AI’s success with over 20 million monthly active users, the startup has struggled with monetizing its services and managing user behavior. These challenges underscore the complexities within the AI industry, where high user engagement does not always equate to revenue, raising concerns about sustainability.
Noam Shazeer will play a crucial role in leading Google’s new AI initiative, Gemini. As one of the three leaders steering this project, his expertise will be vital in navigating the challenges and expectations associated with its development.
Shazeer’s return to Google signifies a strategic pivot in the company’s approach to AI, emphasizing collaboration and substantial investment. While this move aims to strengthen Google’s AI capabilities, it also raises questions about the future sustainability of Character.AI and the broader impact on the tech industry.
