Amazon, BigBasket get nod for liquor delivery in West Bengal

Amazon and Alibaba backed BigBasket, are e-commerce giants approved to deliver liquor in West Bengal, according to a document. Online grocery platform, BigBasket, said this will be the company's first foray into the country's liquor delivery segment. The clearance also indicates Amazon's entry into space, perhaps for the first time in India as per ecommerce news india.

The state-owned West Bengal State Beverages Corporation Ltd. (BevCo) has invited the two companies to sign home delivery agreements after finding them eligible, according to the June 19 notice.

Asked when BigBasket would start operations, Hari Menon CEO  told: "I can't confirm now how long we will start, but yes, it will be the first for the company." Amazon did not comment on approval.

Ecommerce news IndiaZomato and Swiggy food ordering platforms have already started delivering alcohol in West Bengal with Kolkata and Siliguri after getting the required approvals, followed by the signing of the agreements.

Retailer  Spencer's and HipBar also joined the fray as the government allowed the home delivery of alcohol to reduce footage in stores amid a coronavirus outbreak.

BevCo asked eight other, less well-known companies, that have expressed an interest in alcohol delivery, to demonstrate the capabilities of their platforms in executing orders online.

Jharkhand was the first state in the country to allow the delivery of liquor by online platforms.
