No matter how much we’d like to stick to the conventional ideology; the advent of technology never ceases to amaze us. Every month; there’s just something new which takes over the world and becomes viral within a matter of seconds.

Wireless charging did that a little while ago and the number of fans are still on the up with every passing day. No more cables. No more looking around for a charger in the middle of the night. No more looking for suitable plugs. Its such a matter of convenience; why wouldn’t consumers fall for it?

Let’s check how it works.

How does wireless charging work?

Well, all you need is a couple of things – a device which is capable of handling wireless charging and a charging device which is compatible with your mobile phone. Plug the charger into an outlet and just place your phone over it; its that easy.

It is essentially based on magnetic resonance or IPT. IPT or Inductive Power Transfer is the process of transfer of electric currents between 2 compatible objects via usage of coils, in a way that induces an electromagnetic field.

Here’s a more detailed rundown of how wireless charging works its magic:

  • The mains voltage received by the charger is transformed into AC (alternating current) of high frequency.

  • This AC is then transferred to the transmitter coil via the circuit. This results in the AC in turn inducing a magnetic field into the coil which is time varying in nature.

  • The AC inside the coil induces a magnetic field which then extends to the receiver coil.

  • The magnetic field is then able to generate current within the device coil. The phenomenon where the energy is exchanged between the receiver and transmitter coil is known as resonant coupling.

  • The current which is flowing inside the coil is transformed into DC thanks to the function of the receiver circuit which is successfully used to charge the battery in a wireless manner.

This is the process behind the power transfer through the air gap.

Some of the most popular smart phones in the market today have turned to wireless charging, and they include:

  • Samsung Galaxy Note 8 and Galaxy Note 5

  • Apple iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X

  • Samsung Galaxy S8 Active, S8+, S7, S7 Edge, S7 Active

  • LG V30

  • Motorola Moto Z Play, Moto Z2 Force, Moto Z2 Play

Benefits of Wireless Charging

  • The process of charging simply exudes bundles of convenience to users; which at the end of the day, is what matters the most.

  • It is a safe and reliable method to charge.

  • It can be used anywhere and everywhere.

  • It eliminates the usage of wires, cables and other physical connectors. Hence, it showcases efficiency and safety merits over its traditional counterparts.

  • Whether it is smart phones, industrial equipment or other applications, wireless charging presents a continuous, safe and trustworthy method of charging devices.

  • Helps inhibit corrosion which is often seen in other conventional chargers due to water and oxygen.

  • Helps eliminate the concept of debris and sparks related to wired devices.
