OpenAI introduces a new AI model and a desktop version of ChatGPT

OpenAI on Monday released a new AI feature and ChatGPT dashboard, along with a new user interface, the company's latest initiative to expand the use of its popular chatbot.

The upgrade to GPT-4 is accessible for all, including OpenAI's free users, confirmed technical director Mira Murati during a live-streamed event. He went on to say that the latest version, GPT-4o, has been significantly enhanced to be faster and offer improved functionality in text, video, and audio. OpenAI intends to enable users to have video conversations with ChatGPT.

“This is the first time we have taken a big step forward when it comes to ease of use,” Murati said.

Investors value OpenAI at over 80 billion USD, with support from Microsoft. Established in 2015, the company is facing challenges in maintaining its position in the generative AI sector and generating revenue as it invests heavily in processors and infrastructure for model development and training.

The letter o in GPT-4o stands for omni. Murati said the new model allows ChatGPT to handle 50 different languages with improved speed and quality, and will also be available via the OpenAI API, allowing developers to start building applications using the new model today.

She added that GPT-4o is twice as fast as GPT-4 Turbo and half its cost

OpenAI members showcased the new model's voice features, such as soothing someone's nerves before a public speech. Mark Chen, a researcher at OpenAI, claimed that the model has the ability to comprehend emotions and can collaborate with users to change it. The company requested him to examine the user's characteristics in order to determine the emotions that individual was experiencing.

"Hi, how are you doing?" "Is there a way I can make your day better right now?" The ChatGPT audio feature is activated when the user is present.

According to the blog post, the company will soon test the voice mode with paid users receiving ChatGPT Plus in the upcoming weeks. OpenAI also states that the new model can reply to users' voice calls "in under 232 milliseconds, with an average of 320 milliseconds, which is comparable to human response time in conversation."

During his slumber, Chen showcased his storytelling skills and was requested to alter his voice to a more intricate or mechanical tone. He requested that she sing the narrative.

In addition, the new OpenAI can act as a translator, even in voice mode, the company said. Chen showed the ability to listen to Murati in Italian as he spoke English and translate their words into their own language.

Team members have also demonstrated the ability to solve mathematical equations and help write code, positioning it as a strong competitor to Microsoft's own GitHub Copilot.

For OpenAI, the announcement is one of the company's biggest announcements since the August launch of ChatGPT Enterprise, the AI-level AI chatbot. That tool has been in development for "less than a year" and has the help of more than 20 companies of all sizes and industries, said OpenAI CEO Brad Lightcap told CNBC at the time.

OpenAI, Microsoft and Google are at the forefront of the AI gold rush as companies in every business landscape integrate chatbots and AI-powered tools into critical services to protect the time left by competitors. Earlier this month, the OpenAI Competition Anthropic announced its first professional prize and a free iPhone app.

A record 29.1 billion USD was recorded in nearly 700 generative AI deals in 2023, an increase of more than 260% from last year, according to PitchBook. The market is estimated to exceed 1 trillion USD in revenue within a year.

Some in the industry have raised concerns about the speed of untested services coming to market, and academics and experts are worried about the technology's intention to spread the word.

After ChatGPT was launched in November 2022, it broke records at the time as the fastest-growing app in history, and now has 100 million active users per week. According to OpenAI, more than 92% of Fortune 500 companies are using the platform.

Murati said at Monday's event that OpenAI wants to "take some of the mysticism out of technology."

"In the coming weeks, we will roll out these capabilities to everyone,"she said.

The new model will first roll out Tuesday to ChatGPT Plus and Team customers, then to Enterprise later, a blog post on Monday said. It will also be available to free users of ChatGPT starting Monday, with unlimited usage. ChatGPT Plus users receive five times more messages than free users, and ChatGPT Team and Enterprise have more usage limits.

Murati concluded the livestreamed event by thanking Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang and his team for providing the necessary graphics processing units (GPU) to power OpenAI technology.

"I want to thank the amazing OpenAI team, and also thank Jensen and the Nvidia team for bringing us the highest quality GPUs to make this demo possible today," she said.
