Nvidia launches AI-powered playground for building the future of 6G

Nvidia on Monday unveiled an AI-powered software platform that allows research into 6G technology through simulating communications environments in the cloud.

The new communications technology known as 6G, the successor to 5G, is expected to be commercially launched around 2030.

Software and AI are increasingly being deployed across the telecom sector, including RAN (Radio Access Network) hardware like base stations and antennas.

Nvidia's platform will include an application that simulates environments such as individual cell towers or entire cities, allowing researchers and organizations to test 6G networks in real-time.

Nvidia said early adopters of the platform included Ansys, Nokia, Samsung, SoftBank Corp and Northeastern University in Boston.

"The massive increase in connected devices and hosting new applications in 6G will require a vast leap in wireless spectral efficiency in radio communications," Ronnie Vasishta, senior vice president of communications at Nvidia, said in a statement.

Technology shares rose on Monday as investors prepared for Nvidia's Worldwide Artificial Intelligence Developer Conference in San Jose, California.

But European stocks fell, boosted by a drop in the telecommunications sector. Shares of equipment maker Ericsson closed down 5.4%, while Nokia shares fell 4%.

Telecom equipment providers are no longer the only drivers of the mobile infrastructure market and must partner with chip companies and cloud providers, an analyst said.
