India's sugar exports increased by 291% from US$1.177 billion in FY 2013/2014 to US$4.6 billion in FY21/22. According to DGCI & S, India has exported sugar to 121 countries around the world.

Sugar exports increased by 65% in 2021-2022 compared to the previous year. The increase was achieved despite logistical challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic in the form of high freight rates, lost containers, etc.

From 2021-22 (April-February), India exported $769 million worth of sugar to Indonesia, followed by Bangladesh ($561 million), Sudan ($530 million) and the United Arab Emirates ($270 million). India has also exported sugar to Somalia, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan, Nepal, China etc. Indian attractions also include the United States, Singapore, Oman, Qatar, Turkey, Iran, Syria, Canada, Australia and South Africa. , Germany, France, New Zealand, Denmark, Israel, Russia, Egypt etc.

Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and Karnataka account for nearly 80% of the country's total sugar production. Other major sugar producing countries are Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Tamils, Maharashtra, Bihar, Haryana and Punjab.

In particular, India is the second largest producer of sugar in the world after Brazil. Since 2010-2011, India has consistently produced a surplus of sugar that far exceeds national needs. This record can reduce the stock of sugar producers for export and also benefit the farmers as the increased demand for Indian sugar is likely to improve their productivity.
