Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has announced that aspiring immigrants seeking to make Canada their permanent home will have to prepare for a significant increase in fees.

B2B reports that the Government of Canada announced in a Gazette notice on March 30 an increase of about 12 percent in the "permanent resident fee" that will take effect at the end of this month.

The fee to obtain Canadian permanent residence will increase from the current 515 Canadian dollars (CAD) to 575 Canadian dollars as of April 30, 2024, a significant increase of approximately 12 percent.

An IRCC statement cited by News 18 reads: “Permanent resident rates will increase beginning at 9:00 a.m. ET on April 30, 2024 by the aggregate percentage increase published by the Canadian Consumer Price Index. Statistics Canada rounded to the nearest five dollars for the previous two years."

Obtaining permanent residency in Canada is similar to obtaining a green card in the United States, which opens the door to potential Canadian citizenship. This separate fee must be paid when applying for permanent resident status, the report added.
