Twitter owner Elon Musk who said talked about his plans to rebrand the platform and do away with the brand's iconic logo. Musk hinted at replacing the familiar blue bird logo with a new symbol, probably something like his all-time favorite "X". In addition, he also said that any post on Twitter, usually called a tweet, will be renamed to an "X".
In another post, he wrote, "If a good enough X logo is posted tonight, we'll go live worldwide tomorrow."
In another post, he also wrote that x.com now points to twitter.com.
The change, which was not evident on the website on Sunday, followed Musk's recent admission that advertising revenue is still roughly half of what it was before. Twitter's cash flow has been negative as a result of that and its heavy debt load.
The move would further alienate the original user base fiercely loyal to Twitter, Mike Proulx, research director at Forrester, said on Sunday.
"On the one hand, you can make the argument he would be getting rid of an iconic brand. On the other hand, he is signaling it is a new day for what Twitter used to be and that the company is heading in a different direction with a different user base."
The billionaire Musk said in a post on Sunday that he wanted to change the Twitter logo and asked his millions of followers if they supported changing the site's color scheme from blue to black. Post a stylized X image on a black background with an outer space theme.
"And soon we shall bid adieu to the Twitter brand and, gradually, all the birds," he said.
On Sunday afternoon, Twitter's new CEO, Linda Yaccarino, wrote in a tweet: "It's an exceptionally rare thing - in life or in business, that you get a second chance to make another great impression. Twitter made a massive impression and changed the way we communicate. Now, X is going even further, transforming the global town square."
Under Musk's tumultuous tenure since he bought Twitter in October, the company has changed its business name to X Corp, reflecting the billionaire's vision to create a "super app" like China's WeChat.
Earlier in April, Twitter's legacy blue bird logo on Twitter was temporarily replaced by the Dogecoin Shiba Inu dog, helping to increase the cryptocurrency's market value. The company came under widespread criticism from users and marketing professionals when Musk announced earlier this month that Twitter would limit how the number of tweets per day that multiple accounts can read.
The daily limits helped Meta Platforms-owned rival service Threads, surpass 100 million sign-ups within five days of its July 5 launch.
