Jindal Steel & Power has achieved BIS certification for manufacturing India's first fire-rated steel structures at its own section and rail factory in Raigarh, Chhattisgarh.

Hot rolled structural steel, manufactured to IS 15103 standards, will be able to withstand temperatures up to 600°C for up to three hours, and can be used in high temperature or fire prone areas.

Fire protection was a challenge in the design of steel structures. The availability of fire resistant steel will lead to a more efficient design of structures.

The global structural steel market is expected to grow to 162 billion dollars by 2027, at a compound annual growth rate of six percent.

The new BIS 15103 grade will be used to fabricate steel structures for infrastructure projects such as industrial structures, refineries, bridges, subway projects, hospitals, commercial and residential buildings, along with power and steel plants.

Bimlendra Jha, managing director of Jindal Steel and Power, said the license to produce fire-resistant steel would be a game-changer for improving infrastructure and safety standards in India.
