The National carrier of India, Air India (AI) is currently facing mass resignation by its pilots because they are not happy and satisfied with their current salary and promotion.

There are currently around 120 Airbus A-320 pilots who have given their resignation after their demands for an increment in their salaries as well as promotion were not paid any attention by the Air India Management.

This came in the backdrop of the Central government's decision to immediately start the process for the divestment of Air India's stake, which already has a debt of about Rs 60,000 crore.

Speaking to ANI (Asian News International) one of the pilots who had recently resigned from the National carrier had said in a statement, "Air India management should have listened to our grievances. Our demand for a salary hike and promotion has been pending for a very long time but they have failed to give us a strong assurance."

He also said that the AI pilots have been facing a lot of financial pressure as they have to pay back a lot of student and other loans. "Even we pilots are not able to withdraw our salary on time," he added.

The pilots are first hired on a contractual basis for the first five years with a low salary. He said that they were hoping of getting an increment and promotion as they gain experience over the years but they are stuck at the same salary for a long time and promotions are late.

The pilots who have resigned from Air India are mostly sure that they will get a job somewhere else as the aviation market is currently employing. Currently, the following Indian airlines are operating Airbus A-320 flights including IndigoAir, GoAir, Vistara, and AirAsia.

As per an Air India Spokesperson, the airline currently has surplus pilots and the resignation of some of the pilots will not affect Air India Operations. "AI operation will not suffer at any cost, due to resignation," he added.

Presently, Air India has a total of 2000 pilots out of which 400 are executive. Currently, the National Carrier has a debt of Rs 60,000 crore. There have been attempts to divest the government stake in the airline that failed to find any takers in the first round of its disinvestment process that was held about 17 months ago.

But this time,  the government may sell its entire stake in Air India ever since the plan of selling only a partial stake had failed to gain the interest of the investors.

Air India is the flag carrier airline of India with its headquarters at New Delhi. It is owned by a government-owned enterprise (Air India Limited).

The sale of the carrier Air India is crucial for the Indian government as it is hoping to meet its highest-ever divestment target of Rs 1.05 trillion for the current fiscal period. The panel of Ministers headed by our Union Home Minister Amit Shah had met for the first time on 19th September 2019 to explore the different options to take the divestment plan ahead.
