The Indian unit of Apple's Taiwanese contract manufacturer Foxconn will assemble the iPhone 12 at its factory in southern Tamil Nadu, according to sources.

The US tech giant has said that Apple has begun assembling the iPhone 12 in India, as the company ramps up manufacturing operations in the world's second-largest smartphone market.

"We are proud to begin producing iPhone 12 in India for our local customers," Apple said in a statement Thursday, without naming the vendor making the smartphone.

Two sources familiar with the matter said Apple's Indian unit of Taiwanese contract manufacturer Foxconn will assemble the device at its plant in the southern state of Tamil Nadu.

Foxconn did not immediately respond to a request for comment but has previously said it does not comment on the client-specific work.

Apple moved some production areas from China to other markets while waging the trade war between Washington and Beijing. A person familiar with the matter said in November that Foxconn was transporting some iPad and MacBook equipment to Vietnam from China at his request.

Cupertino, California-based Apple has been betting heavily on India since it began assembling iPhones in the country in 2017 through another Taiwanese supplier, Wistron.

Foxconn, Wistron, and third-party vendor Pegatron have jointly committed nearly $ 900 million (approximately Rs. 6,540 crores) over five years to build iPhone models in India, taking advantage of New Delhi's plan of $ 6.7 billion (approximately Rs. 48,660 crores) to boost smartphone exports.

Reuters reported last month that Apple also plans to bring its iPad tablet assembly to India.

India's Technology Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad tweeted after the news of the iPhone 12 production in India: "Good to see our efforts to make India a major manufacturing hub for mobile devices and components attract global attention."
