"Beijing is actively promoting the reprehensible practice of forced labor and the abusive plans for DNA collection and analysis to suppress its citizens," Commerce Minister Wilbur Ross said in a statement.

The Chinese embassy in Washington declined to comment.

He added that the additions "will ensure that American technology will not help the Chinese Communist Party's crimes against humanity and dire human rights violations against Uyghurs and other minorities in Xinjiang, including forced DNA collection."

In a letter to Ross on Monday, Esquel CEO John Chen asked to remove his unit from the list. “Esquel never uses forced labor, and we will never use forced labor. "We absolutely and absolutely oppose forced labor," Chen wrote.

Efforts to contact other companies in China for comments outside normal business hours failed.

Also blacklisted is Hetian Haolin Hair Accessories Co. On May 1, the United States Customs and Border Protection (CBP) said it had stopped importing the company's hair products, citing evidence of forced labor.

On July 1, Newark Customs and Border Protection confiscated a shipment containing nearly 13 tons of hair products valued at more than $ 800,000 in human hair that it said originated in Xinjiang.
