Globally, World Paper Bag Day is celebrated on July 12, with the goal of raising awareness of the benefits of using an eco-friendly alternative to packaging and carrying solutions, especially over plastic options available worldwide that are causing more harm than advantages to the ecosystem.

Since time immemorial, the paper has been used for various reasons. And now, with increased awareness, the use of this versatility has increased exponentially, be it for writing, packaging, carrying items, cleaning, and even applications in construction and industrial procedures.

Here are 4 paper startups that are helping make Earth a sustainable place to live.

1. Bluecat Paper

Kavya Madappa and Nikhil Reddy founded Bluecat Paper in 2018. The startup produces handmade paper and products that are 100% tree-free and sustainable.

The startup began with extensive experimentation using more than 18 types of cellulose-rich agricultural waste like flax, lemongrass, mulberry, rice stubble, coffee husks, banana stalks, coconut shells, and even elephant poo.

Since its inception, Bluecat Paper has exported its products to about 30 countries around the world, including the UK, USA, Australia, Spain, Italy, and Canada.

The startup also partnered with Anna Gadecka, co-founder of Bee Saving Paper, Poland, to create a unique paper that saves bees by allowing them to extract glucose from the paper and take it home.

2. Adeera Packaging

The startup was co-founded by Sushant Gaur, Atulya Bhatia, and Ashish Agarwal. Passionate about addressing environmental concerns and leaving a better planet for the next generation, the three found their calling in their mission to replace plastic bags with paper.

Realizing the need for organization in the highly unregulated paper bag industry, Adeera packing today offers products across India with daily deliveries of more than 30,000 PIN codes along with customization options.

Currently with five factories in India, the startup has committed to using paper from traceable and sustainable sources. The inks they use are all water and adhesive based.

They use 100% plastic-free water and oil barrier coating that is also heat sealable, making it an ideal choice.

3. OG Hemp

OG Hemp sells all-natural, chemical-free, non-toxic, tree-free, and compostable paper worldwide. The startup, which is based in Kolkata, started in the year 2018.

The startup makes paper using high-quality hemp crops, carbon-negative raw materials, and hybrid composites. Hemp has many advantages, such as paper made from hemp does not age or change color, and it is easy to make paper without using toxic materials.

Hemp paper is durable and has a low carbon footprint. It can be recycled up to 8 times and is highly resistant to mold and mildew.
