Bengaluru  International Airport Limited (BIAL) on Tuesday announced  the launch of the first phase of BLR Metaport, a platform to escapade Terminal 2 (T2) of Kempegowda International Airport in the metaverse.

The metaverse is a highly realistic, immersive and interactive shared virtual space, thanks to the use of Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) technology.

Built in collaboration with Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Polygon, BLR Metaport offers an immersive three-dimensional (3D) virtual experience of the newly launched T2 aircraft at Bengaluru airport. Interested passengers and the public can log on to the website of BLR metaport and virtually walk through and navigate the new terminal using their phones or other smart devices.

The 3D interface will give customers new ways to interact with the airport, such as checking in for flights, navigating the terminals, making purchases and social aspects such as communicating with other passengers, according to a BIAL statement. “This is our first foray into the world of Web3 and non-fungible tokens (NFTs), and our goal is to delight travelers with a unique, immersive and virtual experience,” said Satyaki Raghunath, BIAL's director of strategy and development.

The release says that BLR Metaport is built on the fundamentals of decentralization, whereby control and decision-making are transferred from a centralized entity to a distributed network.

It makes use of polygonal block chain to enable smooth exchange of digital assets by users. These digital assets can be digital works of art in BLR Metaport, which are certificates awarded for completing various training courses related to industry, collectibles, utilities, and NFT souvenirs. BLR Metaport Aims the Future aims to allow users to purchase from various brands remotely.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated station T2, which was built at a cost of around Rs 5000 crore, on 11 November.
