Ashwani Bhatia, a former banker, took over as a Full-Time Member (WTM) of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi).

Bhatia, who was previously a managing director at State Bank of India, will be responsible for departments including Alternative Investment Fund and Foreign Portfolio Investors, Corporate Finance and Research, among others, according to a statement released on Wednesday.

He will also be responsible for the Market Intermediary Regulation and Control Service, which regulates stockbrokers.

Bhatia will be Sebi's third full-time board member, alongside SK Mohanty and Ananta Barua. The positions of two full-time members remained vacant after the terms of G Mahalingam and Madhabi Puri Buch ended last year.

Buch was appointed chairman of Sebi last month.
