BCCI broadcast rights go to Star India for over ₹6,100 cr

Star India retained the media rights for all bilateral cricket matches in the country for INR 6,138.10 crore for a period of five years. Star India will be paying about INR 60.17 crore per match to the BCCI. These rights include both-television and digital media rights for all the international matches played by the Indian cricket team in India from April 2018 to March 2023.

Star India now has the rights to broadcast a total of 102 matches as a part of the Future Tours Program by the ICC in the next five years. Star had got the Global Media Rights of the IPL for a period of five years for a sum of INR 16,347.50 crore. The broadcasting giant has spent a total amount of INR 22,485.6 crore on two properties of BCCI in less than nine months. With this win, Star has created a monopoly in cricket broadcasting in the industry. It currently holds three major cricket properties- IPL; International Cricket Council broadcast rights and Indian cricket broadcast rights.

It also holds media rights for Asian Cricket Council’s events, regional Twenty20 tournaments such as Karnataka Premier League and Tamil Nadu Premier League and cricket in New Zealand and Bangladesh. However, its rival Sony Pictures Network has rights to seven cricket boards including Sri Lanka, England, West Indies, South Africa, Pakistan, Australia and Zimbabwe in addition to the media rights to popular T20 tournaments like the Caribbean Premier League and Australia’s Big Bash League.
